K4C Hubcare: a 360° electronic system for optimising social care

After our initial emergency work in India, which has been implemented in the southern state of Karnataka, we now seek to launch a new, holistic intervention which improve the lives of carers in a number of different ways, and deliver improved care services.

We believe that supporting the health and wellbeing of the people who provide care is central to an effective care system, and results in an improved quality of caregiving. Thus the benefits of our approach are multiplied a hundred fold in the way they impact on those receiving care.

For project HubCare we propose creating an open- source platform that can be tailored to help carers look after their patients and themselves.

In the first part of this new project we will perform a needs analysis in the state of Karnataka, India (where we already have a presence) to define, categorise and prioritise the challenges of the social care system, local healthcare services and capabilities, government finance and economic constraints.

After analysing the data gathered in part 1 we will plan, design and implement a pilot program that will deliver a solution to the needs of carers within the Karnataka state.

At this stage, our hypothesis is that social care workers need an electronic record of their patients in order to optimise the care they provide. This required electronic record would offer an overview to all the individuals and institutions involved in a patient’s care and do so in a way that is unobtrusive, constructive and private, sharing only the information that is relevant to the person that is viewing it.

Should our hypothesis be confirmed in the needs analysis, we will then develop such an electronic recording system and trial the system out. For areas where there is limited access to the internet and technology in general, a more suitable approach will be adapted and tried out. As the electronic recording system is being trialled, we will move into the planning phase for the delivery of the scaled-up version of this project.

There are lots of different ways you can get involved. By donating, volunteering, fundraising or simply helping us spread the word about our work, your support will make a huge impact. Together, we can overcome the challenges facing social carers on a global scale.
